Dashboard Settings

Click on the Dashboard settings button to configure the dashboard settings.

Your screen will look like the one below.

The dashboard settings page enables you to:

  1. General: Edit general dashboard properties, including time settings.
  2. Annotations: Add annotation queries.
  3. Variables: Add dashboard variables.
  4. Links: Add links.
  5. JSON Model: View the dashboard JSON model.
  6. Save Dashboard: Save the dashboard.
  7. Save As: Save the dashboard in a different format.

General Dashboard Settings

The general settings of the dashboard include certain general options.

The general options include the basic dashboard settings such as:

  • Name: Dashboard’s name.
  • Description: Dashboard’s description.
  • Tag: Add a tag.
  • Folder: The folder that you want to save the dashboard in.
  • Editable: Set to read-only to disable all editing. Reload the dashboard for changes to take effect.

Time Options

Adjust dashboard time settings when you want to change the dashboard timezone, and the local browser time, and specify auto-refresh time intervals.

  • Timezone: Specify the local time zone of the service or system that you are observing.
    • Default: It uses the default selected time zone for the user profile, team, or organization.
    • Local browser time: The time zone configured for the viewing user browser is used.
    • Standard: ISO 8601 time zones, including UTC.
  • Week Start: The day you want to start the week.
  • Auto-Refresh: Configure the options displayed for relative time and the auto-refresh options. Entries are comma-separated and accept any valid time unit.
  • Now Delay: Override the now time by entering a time delay. Use this option to accommodate known delays in data aggregation to avoid null values.
  • Hide Time Picker: Select this option if you do not want it to display the time picker.
  • Refresh Live Dashboards: Continuously re-draw panels where the time range references ‘now’

Panel Options

The panel options allow you to control the graph tooltip and hover highlight behavior across different panels.

There are three types of options for this, which include the following:

  • Default
  • Shared Crosshair
  • Shared Tooltip

Annotations Dashboard Settings

  • Annotation queries retrieve event data for visualization in graph panels.
  • Events are shown as vertical lines with hover-over icons for details.
  • Annotations integrate event info into graphs.
  • Access Annotations: Dashboard settings > Annotations > Add annotation query.

  • Now, enter a name and select a data source.
  • Complete the rest of the form to build a query and annotation.

The query editor UI changes based on the data source you select. Refer to the Query section for more details on how to construct a query.

Variables Dashboard Settings

  • Create interactive dashboards using variables.
  • Replace hard-coded values in queries with dynamic variables.
  • Variables appear as dropdowns for easy data selection.
  • Access Variables: Dashboard settings > Variables > Add variable button.

  • In the General section, name the variable. This is the name that you will later use in queries.

  • Select a variable Type from the following options:

  1. Query
  2. Custom
  3. Text Box
  4. Constant
  5. Data Source
  6. Interval
  7. Ad hoc Filters

💡Note: The variable type you select impacts which fields you populate on the page.

  • Define the variable and click on Update.

Links Dashboard Settings

Dashboard links enable you to place links to other dashboards and websites directly below the dashboard header. Links provide easy navigation to related dashboards and content.

  1. On the Dashboard settings panel, click Links in the left side section menu and then the Add dashboard link button.

  1. Enter the title and in the Type field, select Dashboard or Link.

  1. To add a dashboard link:
    • Add an optional tag. Tags are useful for creating a dynamic dropdown of dashboards that all have a specific tag.
    • Select any of the dashboard link Options.
    •  Click Apply.
  1. To add a link:
    • Add a URL and tooltip text that appears when the user hovers over the link.
    • Select an icon that appears next to the link.
    • Select any of the dashboard link Options.

JSON Model Dashboard Settings

A dashboard is stored as a JSON object containing the metadata of its dashboard, like properties, panel details, queries, and more. To see this JSON model, go to the Dashboard settings page and click on JSON Model.
