Monitoring vuSmartMaps

vuSiteManager

vuSiteManager is a monitoring and management application that observes, manages, and orchestrates vuSmartMaps™. It is installed as part of the vuSmartMaps installation and has its own front-end UI and backend datastore. Depending upon the scale of the vuSmartMaps installation, it is either installed on a separate virtual machine (for larger setups) or the same virtual machine as vuSmartMaps.

vuSiteManger offers the functionalities, as outlined below:

  • Self-Observability: It continuously observes the vuSmartMaps installation and notifies the administrator of any issues in vuSmartMaps performance, enabling users to take corrective action if necessary. Provides a comprehensive list of activities it performs as part of self-observability, including monitoring system resources, tracking performance metrics, and analyzing error logs.
  • Alerts: Stay informed instantly about any downtime experienced by VM hosts or K8s components. These notifications are displayed as Alerts, providing detailed descriptions in an easy-to-read tabular format.

Accessing vuSiteManager

  1. To access vuSiteManager, open any web browser and type in the vuSiteManager URL. When installing vuSmartMaps, you will specify the target IP and define the port. This IP and Port will serve as a URL to access the vuSiteManager.
  2. When you access the browser with the  URL, you’ll see a login screen as shown below:

  1. Here, you need to key in the provided Username and Password.
    • Both Username and Password fields are mandatory to be entered. It must be noted that the Username is case insensitive and the Password is case-sensitive.
  1. Once logged in, you are taken to the landing page or what’s called a Home Page.

vuSiteManager Homepage

The homepage of the vuSiteManager displays the various panels each providing an overview of the vuSmartMaps’ availability, health, and performance in the selected time range. On clicking on each of these panels, the user will be redirected to the dedicated storyboard to get a detailed view.

At the top right corner, we have the Time selector and profile option. With a Time Selector, you can select the time range for observing the status of vuSmartMaps.

On the left-hand side, you will see a list of tabs. By clicking on any of them separately, you will be navigated to a page based on your selection.

The menu list is as follows

Home

The Home page provides an overview of the health and performance of various infrastructure components and services.

Let’s take a closer look at each panel and what it representsThe first panel on the homepage is Overall Health. The Overall Health panel is the graphical representation of the overall health of the vuSmartMaps cluster. When you click on this panel, you will be redirected to the Overall Health page.

The panel next to Overall Health is Availability, which showcases the graphical representation of the availability of the vuSmarMaps cluster URL. Clicking on this panel will redirect you to the Availability page.

Another set of panels includes Alerts, VM Hosts, and Services

.

  • Alerts showcase the total number of active alerts, indicating how many are critical and how many are under warning.
  • VM Hosts display the total number of VM hosts, showing how many are Down and how many are in an Alert state.
  • Services display the total number of services, indicating how many are Down and how many are in the Alert state.

Clicking on each of these panels redirects the user to the dedicated storyboard.

At the bottom, K8s (Kubernetes) Metrics give insight into K8s cluster components like K8s Pods, K8s Deployment, K8s DaemonSet, and K8s StatefulSet. On clicking this panel, you will be redirected to the dedicated page.

To explore a more detailed view of each of these parameters, please refer to the ‘Exploring vuSiteManager‘ page.

FAQs

Use vuSiteManager’s Self-Observability feature to continuously monitor vuSmartMaps’ performance, system resources, and error logs. For detailed steps, refer to the Monitoring vuSmartMaps page.

vuSiteManager will generate an alert for any downtime. Check the Alerts section for detailed descriptions and take corrective actions based on the severity. More information can be found in the Alerts section.

Navigate to the Services section in vuSiteManager and click the “Logs” button for the desired service. For more information, refer to the Services section.

Use the K8s Metrics section to view detailed health and performance metrics for Pods, Deployments, DaemonSets, and StatefulSets. More details are available in the K8s Metrics section.

Use the search box and ‘Add Filter’ option above the VM Hosts table to input the hostname or IP address and apply additional filters. Detailed instructions are in the VM Hosts section.

The Active and Inactive Alerts panels provide detailed information on current and resolved alerts. For more in-depth analysis, visit the Alerts section.
